What are Varicose Veins?

Vаrісоѕе vеіnѕ, аlѕо knоwn as “vаrісоѕіtіеѕ”, are еnlаrgеd and unhealthy veins that usually arise due to high pressure in veins slightly deeper within the leg. They may be tortuous or twisted, and may bulge from under the skin. You’ll find that they can be red or purple in color. Varicose veins can appear anywhere on the body; however, they are most commonly found on the legs.

Risk Factors

The risk factors for developing varicose veins are the same as those for chronic venous insufficiency. They include: Family history of varicose veins, Venous insufficiency, Female gender, Obesity, Age, Pregnancies, Work that requires prolonged sitting or standing.

Are Varicose Veins Dangerous?

Varicose veins are often treated for cosmetic reasons or personal preference. More often, heaviness, restless legs, or pain will prompt attention. Varicose veins can be an early sign of more serious circulation issues in the veins. Skin discoloration, swelling, bleeding, DVT and ulcerations are associated with untreated varicose veins and require an evaluation by a vein specialist.

Based on your history and test results, your vascular specialist will create a personalized varicose vein treatment plan. With your approval, this will be submitted to your insurance carrier for pre-authorization.
